Movie Review: ‘My Future You’

Regal Entertainment’s “My Future You” emerges as a heartfelt gem that tugs at the emotional strings of its audience while inviting contemplation on the nuanced interplay between dreams, love, and the uncertainty of our future.

At its core, “My Future You” beautifully navigates the landscape of choices and consequences. Themes of love, loss, and self-discovery resonate deeply throughout the narrative.

The chemistry between the leads, portrayed by two rising stars, is electrifying. The portrayals go beyond mere acting; they are authentic, social explorations of what it means to connect in an increasingly digitized world of different time periods. Hindi awkward at cringey sila panoorin, they’re simply promising stars that was rightfully launched in the big screen.

Lex (Seth Fedelin), played with warmth and depth, embodies the internal struggle of wanting more from life while grappling with the need to be whole as a person. Karen (Francine Diaz), portrayed with a mix of charm and vulnerability, captures the essence of a daughter who wants her parents to be reunited.

The dialogue feels genuine and reflective; it allows the characters to express themselves with vulnerability and insight. Despite that they have a computer/phone screen between them, the conversation of the main characters appeared so intimate that you can’t help but feel in between anticipation and kilig.  The event references are precise that it was easy for me to be immersed in both time periods (2009 and 2024).

The direction in “My Future You” of Crisanto B. Aquino is both fluid and thoughtful, allowing for moments of introspection that feel earned rather than forced. The interplay of light and shadows in Luneta Park where they supposedly meet evokes a sense of nostalgia and anticipation that complements the film’s themes beautifully.

This film isn’t just a viewing experience, I found myself uplifted and thoughtful, pondering the choices I’ve made, intertwined with a sense of urgency to accept the past, cherish the present and be ready for the future. The film invites reflection on how we define our futures, reminding us that while we may not have control over every outcome, the journey of self-discovery and love is a beautiful one to embrace.

For anyone yearning for a film that stirs the heart and prompts reflection, My Future You is a must-see this Metro Manila Film Festival 2024 that will resonate long after you’ve left the cinema with a big smile and a happy feeling.
