Dive into García Márquez’s haunting tale transformed into a spellbinding musical experience.

The Far Eastern University Theater Guild (FTG) is back and ready to captivate audiences with its latest offering, “NIYEBE: ISANG MUSIKAL.” Kicking off their 91st season, this experimental play dives deep into the emotional landscapes of love and loss, drawn from the brilliant mind of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Scheduled to run from February 12 to March 27, 2025, this groundbreaking production boasts a dynamic score and heartfelt direction from Vince Lim, with support from Jesus Singh III for vocal coaching. The choreography, also a standout feature, is led by Carlon Matobato and complemented by Dudz Teraña, who serves as the director, lyricist, and adapter of this poignant tale.

Set against the unforgiving winter backdrop of Europe, “Niyebe” transports us into the lives of newlyweds Billy Sanchez and Nena Deconte, whose romantic getaway swiftly morphs into a nightmare. A seemingly innocent scrape on Nena’s finger sets off a chain of events culminating in tragedy. As Billy grapples with his heartbreaking loss in an unfamiliar land, he faces a relentless bureaucracy that denies him closure and forces him to confront his deepest fears about existence and purpose.
The production features a talented cast, with RB Pascua and Dave Bambang taking on the role of Billy, while Kesiah Eunice Aritao and Brigitta Claire Marilla portray the ill-fated Nena. Aaron Bayani lends his voice as the Narrator, adding depth to the story’s unfolding drama. With a diverse ensemble also joining the production, the musical promises to deliver an electrifying performance that resonates with themes of despair and hope.
Dudz Teraña, in his visionary adaptation, emphasizes the underlying societal issues woven into the narrative. He shares, “Niyebe isn’t just a love story; it’s a reflection of how the fragility of happiness and loss can spiral into a deep existential crisis.” Teraña’s approach seeks not just to entertain but also to challenge audiences, drawing parallels between the characters’ plight and real-world issues of class disparity and existential questioning.
Behind the scenes, the brilliance of “Niyebe” is supported by a dedicated team that ensures every detail is executed flawlessly. From Stage Manager Maria Y Ysabel Delos Reyes to Production Manager Janah Gervacio, the logistical wizardry behind this musical is just as impressive as the performances on stage. The visual artistry, crafted by Production Design Head Kirstan Orbegoso and Costume Designer Margarita Barrameda, immerses the audience into the dreamlike yet harsh world of the story.
As the opening night approaches, marketing efforts led by Cassandra Herilla and her talented team ensure that “Niyebe” reaches audiences far and wide, both on stage and across social platforms.
