A Journey Through Power, Faith, and Duty in the Heart of Judea

In a time when misinformation reigns supreme and the quest for truth feels more elusive than ever, the age-old question posed by one of history’s most controversial figures echoes poignantly: “Ano ba ang katotohanan?” This theme is the beating heart of Pilato, an all-original Filipino musical set to take the stage this April at the PETA Theater Center!

Drawing from the rich tapestry of the “greatest story ever told,” Pilato reimagines the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ through the perspective of Poncio Pilato. This production offers a daring glimpse into a man in turmoil, caught at the intersection of power, faith, and moral duty.

As the story unfolds, we follow Pilato from his youthful ambitions in Rome to his challenging role as the prefect of Judea, a province rife with tension and unrest. The stakes have never been higher as every choice he makes is influenced by a colorful cast of characters: the enigmatic historian Josepo, the scheming high priest Caiaphas, his wise wife Procla, and the tantalizingly mysterious figure of Hesus, rumored to be the so-called King of the Jews.

With Holy Week on the horizon and the country gearing up for the pivotal 2025 elections, Pilato emerges as a crucial exploration of truth’s multifaceted nature. Through enchanting melodies and emotionally charged storytelling, this musical compels us to examine our own choices—both as individuals and as a society.

“Information comes to us in countless forms and modes. But how do we sift through the chaos to uncover the truth? Would we even recognize it if we met it?” mused writer-director Eldrin Veloso. “This play aims to unravel the mystery of truth’s many faces at a time when we stand on the brink of a post-truth era. It’s a narrative that needs to be shared now more than ever.”

Featuring a talented ensemble of seasoned stage veterans alongside budding stars, Pilato promises an emotional and intellectual journey that serves as a stark reminder that the search for truth is both a profound burden and a pathway to salvation—one that has persisted for over two millennia.
