Dante Balboa’s Unique Narrative and Complex Characters Redefine Psycho-drama

In a captivating and deeply personal theatrical debut, Walong Libong Piso is set to redefine stage productions in the Philippines! Spearheaded by the unapologetically bold Director Dante Balboa, this play is not merely a new addition to the arts—it’s a profound artistic statement that demands attention.
Balboa wears many hats as both the writer and director of Walong Libong Piso, a one-character psychological play that delves into the intricate realms of human desire, sexuality, and the often overlooked ramifications of fame. With a stellar cast featuring Paolo Gumabao, Jhon Mark Marcia, Drei Arias, and Juan Paolo Calma, the play will grace the stage at the CCP Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (Black Box Theater) from August 22 to 24, 2025.
Reflecting on the play’s origins, Balboa reveals, “I wrote Walong Libong Piso back in 2007 during my BA Film and Audio Visual Communication at UP.” His inspiration stemmed from personal experiences during his time as a sexy actor, where unexpected encounters infused his storytelling with authenticity and emotional depth. The narrative takes a darker turn, creatively choosing to make its second character invisible, amplifying the themes of tension and introspection.
Balboa describes the play as a complex psychological drama which also tackles issues surrounding hypersexual disorder. “It’s not just a sexy drama—it’s a commentary on identity, morality, and survival,” he elaborates, showing that Walong Libong Piso is rooted in critical societal reflection rather than simply being sensational.
Having a philosophical background significantly enhances Balboa’s work, saying, “Acting, writing, directing—these aren’t hobbies. They’re part of my system.” His ambition to be recognized as a skilled artist is palpable, as he draws inspiration from iconic filmmakers like Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal.

Leading the cast is the talented Paolo Gumabao, marking his theatrical debut in a 90-minute solo performance, presenting unique challenges and rewards. He notes, “Kailangan kong ibigay lahat. Every emotion, every nuance, kailangan lumabas.”
Alternating with him are Jhon Mark Marcia, Drei Arias, and Juan Paolo Calma. Arias speaks to the improvisational nature of his role within the same script: “Paolo is different, I’m different. We all have the same script, but our stories must be different.”
This rotating cast brings a fascinating layer of interpretation to the character and the narrative, intriguing audiences further.

Balboa insists that Walong Libong Piso should be appreciated first as a work of art rather than a mere vessel for moral instruction. “This is my most daring work, and I’m proud these actors are brave enough to take it on,” he declares.
Set to tour various provinces, including Cebu and Davao, Walong Libong Piso promises to be a groundbreaking venture, inviting viewers to engage with the raw and intense world of psychological exploration.
Are you ready for an experience that promises to challenge your perceptions? Mark your calendars for August 22-24, 2025, and witness the journey of Walong Libong Piso at the CCP!
