The Nerves Are Real: One Year in the Making 🎬
This show has been a labor of love—or, perhaps more accurately, a labor of intense paranoia—for the past year. The cast, which includes the incredible quartet of Sue Ramirez, Charlie Dizon, Kaila Estrada, and Janella Salvador, admitted they are nervous, even if they are excited for the release.
Why the nerves? Because this is a suspense thriller. As Sue Ramirez put it, it’s easy to make people laugh or cry, but it’s hard to truly scare them!. They hope the audience “maramdaman nila yung takot” (feels the fear) they intend to deliver. If the intense trailer is anything to go by, they have absolutely nothing to worry about!
The Dark Heart of the Story: Everyone Has Baggage
What makes this show so compelling is that every character is juggling deep, complex secrets and traumas. The actresses gave us a chilling look into the baggage their characters carry:
- Janella Salvador (Alice Miller): Prepare to see a new side of Janella in her first mother role! Her character, Alice, appears to have the perfect life on the outside, but underneath the surface, she is a woman dealing with a lot of trauma and pain.
- Sue Ramirez (Mel Montenegro): Sue’s character, Mel, is the wife of Anton (played by Jameson Blake). Her storyline is devastatingly complex: she is trapped in an abusive relationship not just with her husband, but also with her own parents. This role is going to be a deep, raw dive into generational pain.
- Charlie Dizon (Erica Melendez): Charlie’s character, Erica, is hiding secrets primarily tied to her childhood and family dynamics. The twist? These are secrets that Erica herself is not ready to confront.
- Kaila Estrada (Beth Mora): Playing the role of a teacher, Kaila’s character, Beth, experiences “broken dreams” after an unexpected life-changing event.
Jake’s Transformation: Prison and Psychological Pain
The male leads are bringing the intensity, especially Jake, who revealed he took on the role he’s “really prepared for the most”. To prepare, he even immersed himself in a real prison.
His character carries serious baggage, having been unjustly jailed for 14 years. His journey is one of relentless, scary revenge. Jake confessed this was the hardest role he’s ever done because the character’s acting is “very, very internal,” forcing him to portray a broken man twisted by his environment.
Where to Watch the Unveiling!
The cast is electric, the plot is layered, and the themes are powerful. The audience will definitely struggle to pick a “bias” or figure out who to root for because everyone has their own complex story.
The long wait is almost over! “What Lies Beneath” is finally airing on October 17th!
Don’t miss the secrets! Go stream it on Netflix!
