If you think modern cinema is intense, it’s time for a reality check. Long before CGI took over our screens, Philippine cinema was out there making raw, jaw-dropping masterpieces that shook the culture to its core.
Now, one of the greatest cinematic achievements in Pinoy history is making a massive comeback.
Mark your calendars for June 3. GMA Pictures is bringing the legendary 1999 Metro Manila Film Festival Best Picture, Muro-Ami, back to select SM Cinemas. Trust me, whether you’re a die-hard cinephile or a Gen Z looking to discover what real Pinoy film royalty looks like, this is a big-screen event you cannot miss.
The Dream Team Behind the Legend
To understand why Muro-Ami is such a big deal, you have to look at the geniuses who built it. This wasn’t just a movie; it was a perfect storm of artistic brilliance:
- The Direction: Helmed by the late, incomparable Marilou Diaz-Abaya.
- The Script: Penned by National Artist for Film Ricky Lee alongside acclaimed filmmaker Jun Robles Lana.
- The Cast: Powerhouse performances from Cesar Montano, Pen Medina, Jhong Hilario, and Amy Austria.
It’s a brutal, beautiful, and deeply emotional social drama that tackled the harsh realities of illegal reef fishing and child labor. Decades later, its gut-wrenching story still hits just as hard.
“No AI, Just Pure Artistry”
A special advance screening went down on May 19, bringing the original cast and crew back together. The energy in the room? Absolutely electric.
Cesar Montano couldn’t hide his excitement about seeing his iconic role as Captain Fredo restored to its absolute best.
“I’m very excited. When I heard about it and saw the trailer, I was so happy. I was jumping up and down,” Montano shared.
He also threw a little playful shade at modern filmmaking trends, adding with a laugh: “I’m happy because the film is alive again. And what’s great is there’s no AI here. Ladies and gentlemen, digitally remastered only!”
1,200 Hours of Blood, Sweat, and Pixels
Bringing a 1999 masterpiece into the 2020s is no walk in the park. Central Digital Lab (the same wizards who beautifully restored Jose Rizal) spent a staggering 1,200 hours meticulously cleaning up the film.
According to Central Digital Lab CEO Manet Dayrit, the team had to battle decades of wear and tear—fighting off scratches, molds, fingerprints, and optical dirt.
Because so much of Muro-Ami takes place underwater, the deep scratches on the original film reels posed a massive challenge. The result? A breathtaking restoration that respects the raw texture of the original film while giving it the clarity it deserves for modern cinema screens.
Preserving the Golden Era
This release is part of GMA Pictures’ massive push to protect and celebrate Filipino cinematic heritage. They’ve been on a roll—just last year, they gave the same royal treatment to the 1998 classic Jose Rizal, which is currently streaming on Netflix after a huge gala at the Manila Metropolitan Theatre.
But while streaming is convenient, Muro-Ami was built for the dark room and the massive screen. The booming sound design by Nonong Buencamino and the claustrophobic, intense underwater shots demand your full attention.
